Taking care of your hair in winter

With the return of cold and winter, hair tends to become dull, dry and brittle. They also experience a normal and temporary phenomenon called “seasonal hair loss” or “seasonal alopecia”.

To preserve the full health and beauty of hair, it is essential to improve your daily routine to adapt to the climate and environment.

Why does winter damage hair?

Winter is a harsh time for hair, several factors disrupt its balance. Among the latter, we distinguish:

- The environment

Environmental factors such as cold, wind, rain or even snow have a direct impact on hair. Indeed, the latter can attack and make the hair fiber more vulnerable, drier and brittle.

Cold, dry air causes the hair cuticle to loosen slightly, so moisture cannot be preserved within the hair shaft. Hair becomes drier, brittle and frizzes more easily.

In addition, at the level of the scalp, vasoconstriction of blood vessels occurs. It results in a reduction in the quantity of blood reaching the roots of the hair, which disrupts the functioning of the sebaceous glands and their production of sebum. The hair then becomes more fragile and less hydrated.

- Heating devices

You should know that hair is essentially made up of 90% keratin . The latter is a protective film which gives strength and shine to the hair.

The heat emitted by heating devices such as hair dryers, straighteners or curling irons alters and destroys the keratin present in the hair fiber.

The hair therefore becomes rough and dry because it will have lost all hydration, split ends may appear on the ends and lengths.

- Festive meals

The end-of-year holiday season is often synonymous with excess, including copious, fatty and sugary meals. These can be harmful to the hair.

Indeed, fat and sugar can weaken the hair and damage the blood vessels present in the scalp, which provide oxygen to the hair follicles. Less oxygen means less nutrients are delivered to the hair follicles, leading to hair loss and disrupting their growth process.

- Water too hot

Too hot water in the shower, as well as the variation in temperatures between inside and outside, considerably damages the hair.

First of all, hot water can strip the skin of the head and damage the scalp. Its proper functioning can be disrupted and thus lead to itching or even dandruff.

In addition, hot water eliminates the hair's natural protection, making it more fragile, drier and more sensitive to environmental factors.

- Rubbing against clothing

The incessant friction of winter clothing like woolen sweaters and scarves can damage hair and make it electric.

In addition, wearing a hat too much can prevent the scalp from oxygenating effectively and cause it to sweat excessively. This has the effect of making hair greasy and sticky.

It is therefore all these factors which weaken and damage hair during the winter. Fortunately, there are solutions to remedy this and prevent further hair damage during this period.

Tips for taking care of your hair in winter

Here are some tips, simple and accessible to everyone, to adopt in your routine to take care of your hair in winter:

- Make natural treatments

In order to better counter the harmful effects of winter, nourishing and hydrating your hair are essential steps. For this, it is strongly recommended to use treatments based on vegetable oils .

Coconut oil, castor oil, avocado oil and even argan oil are hair's best allies. These oils help strengthen the hair fiber and effectively protect it from external aggressions.

To benefit from their benefits on the hair, the ideal is to do an oil bath once a week, leaving it on for at least 3 hours on the entire hair (scalp, lengths and ends). For rinsing in the shower, it is recommended to use a mild shampoo without sulfates and silicones so as not to damage the hair.

- Limit the use of heating appliances

As mentioned previously, heating devices used too often damage and weaken the hair fiber.

It is therefore advisable to limit blow-drying, to let your hair dry in the open air as often as possible or to use the “cold” option of the hair dryer.

- Cut the ends

Cutting the ends of the hair is a good gesture for the health and beauty of the hair, especially when it is dry, brittle and damaged .

It is advisable to trim the ends regularly, every ¾ months, to eliminate thin and split ends, and thus get back on a good foundation.

- Have a healthy and balanced diet

Eating a healthy and balanced diet is essential to maintaining beautiful hair.

On the contrary, an undiversified diet rich in sugar/fat results in lackluster and fragile hair, as well as an imbalance of the scalp. In fact, the latter feeds on nutrients brought by the blood circulation to the root of the hair.

Vitamins , trace elements and proteins contribute favorably to the beauty of the hair. It is therefore important to eat unlimited fruits and vegetables, dried fruits (almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, etc.), fatty fish, eggs and white meat.

- Protect your hair

To effectively protect your hair from friction against clothing, it is necessary to create protective hairstyles. Among these hairstyles, the braid or wearing a silk scarf are ideal for protecting the hair from external aggressions.

In addition, to avoid hair rubbing against the pillow during the night, it is best to opt for a satin or silk pillowcase.

Protecting your hair also involves choosing hair products that are gentle and respectful of your hair (shampoo, conditioner, mask, etc.). These products must not contain sulfates, silicones, parabens or even surfactants that are aggressive to the hair.

- Take food supplements for hair beauty

Hair also needs to be nourished from the inside to stay healthy. Indeed, an insufficient intake of vitamins, particularly in the event of a dietary imbalance, can be one of the causes of hair loss and slowed growth.

Taking food supplements based on nutrients and targeted for the beauty of hair is therefore strongly recommended. These will make it possible to effectively and lastingly improve the appearance of the hair.
